The Power of Gratitude

A grateful heart a garden is,
where there is always room
for every lovely, Godlike grace
to come to perfect bloom.
(hymn 3)

We live in a rich and wonderful universe; a universe in which we find love, beauty, intelligence, joy, life, truth, power, understanding, and many other spiritual qualities that define our humanity in the reflection of God. The principle of gratitude causes us to acknowledge the substance of our being by urging us to devote a portion of it to enriching the universe in which we live, including one another. The quality of gratitude keeps the flow of acknowledgement going, without which the substance of our being drifts out of sight, and reach, and becomes lost.

Mary Baker Eddy writes on the subject:

How empty are our conceptions of Deity! We admit theoretically that God is good, omnipotent, omnipresent, infinite, and then we try to give information to this infinite Mind. We plead for unmerited pardon and for a liberal outpouring of benefactions. Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more.

One of the least acknowledged spiritual qualities is gratitude. In our modern world we pay the price for goods received, because it is demanded. Unfortunately, in the process we loose sight of one of vital spiritual qualities of our humanity that connects us with the great heart of divine Love. We need to correct this loss. 

The human economy has drifted far away from the platform of the divine economy, but shouldn't it rather pattern the divine economy.

Mary Baker Eddy commented on Mary Magdalene's affection for Christ Jesus in the house of the Pharisee who had provided no water for his guest to wash his feet, but Mary Magdalene had washed his feet with her tears and dried them with her own hair, and had anointed them with a precious and costly oil.  

I find it interesting to note that Mary Baker Eddy opened the chapter, Christian Science Practice, in the textbook with an exploration of the above story of a profound gratitude. I need to remind myself that an active gratitude for all that we have received and are in the image of God, is really the opening step in scientific Christian healing. It is a spiritual step of embracing divine Truth.
